The standing loss measurement done using a standard temperature of 65°C. Many geysers go up to 70°C. The recommended setting, however, is 60°C, or even 55°C. A lower setting is not really recommended, because of the risk of Legionnaires.
So yes, they aren’t wrong. You should definitely reduce that setting to 60°C if it is set higher.
Legionnaires prevention doesn’t require a temperature over 60°C continuously. So for the RE manne they can exploit the energy savings of a lower geyser temperature when it’s appropriate as long as they do heat the geyser to a safe temperature periodically.
Yep. That’s the highest setting for my heat pump. I actually have the temperature set to 57.
I think a lot of geysers could be turned down. How much it saves an individual I don’t know. COCT giving out this advice suggests that - despite what we like to believe - utilities are not concerned about revenue before all else.

I mean, I understand why CoCT is saying “lower this to 60”. It’s like a minimum thing you should do… they certainly aren’t telling people to RAISE it to 60 ![]()
I’m getting the feeling that I’m one of the few who will only heat water from the grid to ‘just hot enough’
I’ve done that … 40deg and Geyserwise goes off.
Cause the people showering, they only used the hot water tap for a couple of minutes. They “spoel net af”.
So I figured, why waste any money, even solar power, if that is what they wanted.
They moved. So I replaced that 100l geyser with a gas geyser recently.
It is now the 2nd gas geyser - on the property.
Saw gas geysers, the 12l Dewhot Constant Flow ones, costs one 19kg bottle every ±4 months. Cheap as chips for hot water 24/7/365.
2 bottles and one is sorted for ±8-9 months.
Third 50l geyser is hardly switched on - kitchen has a dishwasher.
4th geyser, 150l main one, auto heated by solar power only … if the sun shines.

The Legionella issue. Somewhere here @Village_Idiot made a excellent summery of why it is not that big a concern today.
I turn my thermostat all the way up and in summer use only excess solar and it’s still hot the next day. In winter the timer controls the temperature.
How are you determining when there’s this condition?
Battery charged and panels go to sleep = excess solar now available. I don’t have pool/borehole pumps so easy to manage.
